Murder cases in Kraaifontein decreased between October 1 and December 31, 2025, compared to the same period in 2024, according to the latest crime statistics released by police on Friday, February 20.

A total of 46 murders were recorded during the reporting period last year, down 29% from 65 cases reported during the same three months in 2024 - a decrease of 19 cases.

Despite the drop, Kraaifontein police station remains among the top 10 in the country and the top six in the Western Cape for murder.

The chairperson of the Kraaifontein Community Police Forum (CPF), Mawethu Sila, said they are encouraged by the improvement. He added that the CPF aims to help move the area out of the top 10 in the province and the top 30 nationally for murder.

“We are now out of the top five in the province. This victory did not happen on its own – it was because of a collaboration between the community and police. We just need to correct there and there, and ensure we do not lose momentum. We encourage residents to continue reporting crime," he said.

However, rape cases in Kraaifontein remained unchanged, with 48 cases reported during the same reporting period in both years.

Previously released statistics showed that Kraaifontein had recorded the second-highest number of murder cases in both the Western Cape and nationally for the July to September 2025 reporting period, compared to the same period in 2024.

Common robbery increased sharply in the latest data released on Friday last week, rising by 69% from 48 cases in 2024 to 81 cases in 2025 - an increase of 33 cases. Kraaifontein ranks sixth in the province and 13th nationally for this crime category.

Robbery with aggravating circumstances increased by 13 cases in Kraaifontein from 209 reported in 2024 to 222 cases registered last year.

In Parow, theft out of or from motor vehicles increased by 9% from 106 cases in 2024 to 115 cases in 2025. Common robbery in the area also rose from 74 to 86 cases - an increase of 12 incidents.

Bellville continues to struggle with theft out of or from motor vehicles, with reported cases rising from 170 in 2024 to 185 in 2025.

Acting minister of police Firoz Cachalia said nationally, murder cases for the third quarter period (1 October to 31 December) had declined by 17.6% over the past two years, translating to 1 359 fewer murders.

“Again, firearms remain the single largest weapon driving murder, robbery and organised crime in our country. We will be taking additional measures to address this scourge with a focus on removing illegal firearms and preventing legal firearms from falling into the wrong hands,” he said.

Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said that while the forthcoming South African National Defence Force (SANDF) deployment may offer short-term relief, only increased convictions will sustainably reduce violent crime.

Mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said: “In the past four months, the City confiscated 119 illegal firearms, made over 4 500 arrests, and took more than 16 000 units of drugs off the streets.”
