Some of the houses at the City’s Greenville housing project
The City says that its ongoing Greenville/Fisantekraal housing project will provide Expanded Public Work Programmes (EPWP) opportunities for unemployed residents.
Previously, Northern News reported on the anger some disgruntled Morningstar residents felt at the prospect of having to relocate their homes for the City’s housing project in Fisantekraal and Greenville, (“’Ignored’ Morningstar housing beneficiaries reluctant to move to Fisantekraal,” Northern News, March).
“Homes are currently being handed over at the Greenville Phase 3 subsidised housing project in Fisantekraal. Over the coming months, additional homes will be handed over to qualifying beneficiaries. This project will provide approximately 4 000 housing opportunities, social housing, financed linked houses and commercial opportunities once it is completed,” said mayoral committee member for human settlements Malusi Booi earlier this year.
For the 2021/22 and 2022/23 financial years, a total of 120 planned EPWP work opportunities are linked to this Greenville housing construction, said mayoral committee member for urban waste management, Grant Twigg.
“Recruits will perform a variety of duties such as: basic bricklaying, plastering, plumbing, carpentry and general labour,” he said, adding that about R76 million had been budgeted for the initiative.
When asked whether locals who were born in Greenville/Fisantekraal will be considered first when it comes to applying for the EPWP jobs, Mr Twigg said: “Expanded Public Works Programme candidate names were extracted from the jobseeker database highlighting the boundaries of Sub-council 7 (which includes Fisantekraal).”
The construction of 1 050 housing units is currently ongoing at Greenville Phase 4 and is expected to be completed in June 2025.
“Greenville forms part of a greater housing development, which will eventually boast approximately 4 000 BNG housing opportunities, social housing, financed linked houses and commercial opportunities,” said Mr Booi.
