A non-profit organisation will be running free computer training for people of all ages in Scottsville from next month.
The course will run for three days initially, but there are plans to extend it to an eight-week programme, according to Charlene Miles, director of No Stop, which is supported by fellow NPO YoungPeople@Work in offering the course.
The course is aimed primarily at unemployed youth, but anyone can attend.
The training is free apart from R30 the participants will be asked to pay for a certificate upon completion.
“The computer-literacy training is only an entry point to expose unemployed youth to a network of training and employment opportunities offered by YoungPeople@Work,” Ms Miles said.
Participants will learn about basic computer skills on the first two days and work on creating and updating CVs on the third.
“In many instances, the individuals are unemployed but want to attend and it is for this reason why we decided to start this training in Scottsville at the No Stop office, a walking distance for many individuals,” Ms Miles said.
The training will start on Tuesday April 4, at No Stop’s office at the Bethel Tabernacle Full Gospel Church, at 106 Milton Street, and run continuously on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with slots from 9am to noon and noon to 3pm.
No Stop offers music lessons and other after-school programmes, along with mentoring and counselling, from its office, which is open on weekdays until 4pm.
Frank Julie, the director of YoungPeople@Work, said: “Computer literacy is indispensable in accessing decent work, and our youth are not prepared at school for the world of work. Through rolling out our computer training centre in Scottsville and Delft we are making access to these vital skills easier by cutting out expensive transport costs to our training centre in Parow."
Unemployed youth would not only get computer literacy training but also be connected to employment opportunities through the organisation's networks.
