The City of Cape Town has invited interested parties to comment on the proposal to close a portion of South Street in Bellville Central to make it a car-free zone.
The proposal is to not allow vehicles along South Street between Durban Road and Charl Malan Street.
“The conversion of South Street into a pedestrian street forms part of our public realm strategy to enhance safe pedestrian experiences.
“An open and fully pedestrianised street that is safe to enjoy promotes a street culture buzz and reimagining of our streetscapes,” said Rob Quintas the mayoral committee member for urban mobility.
He added that the Bellville CBD Local Spatial Development Framework was approved by council in December 2023 with the aim of guiding the regeneration of the Bellville CBD.
The comment period opened on Friday February 14 and runs until Monday March 17.
An open day will be held on Saturday March 8 from 9am until noon at the Bellville library, to assist those who cannot read or write or are living with disabilities.
To send your comment you can follow this link or email your submission to Bellville.LSDF@capetown.gov.za. Written submissions can also be submitted to the Sub-council 6 offices at the Bellville civic centre or Bellville library.
