Asher Hartzenberg, 18, a Scottsdene High School matric pupil was fatally shot in Buitensingel Street, Watsonia Park, on Sunday April 8.
Asher was apparently fleeing on foot from gunmen in a vehicle, at about 4pm, when he was shot his face and stomach.
Peter Links, who starts his first term as principal at Scottsdene High School, said school would start on a sad note.
Mr Links said he had served on the school’s disciplinary committee for many years but had never seen Asher in his office for misbehaving.
“He was a quiet and a hard-working learner, and I have to say that he was not a gangster.”
Asher had done well academically in all subjects and “teachers have called me to confirm and they cannot believe that it was Asher that was murdered”.
Kraaifontein police station commander Brigadier Gerda Van Niekerk said police were investigating but no arrests had been made.
