The Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID) unveiled its first mural on Middel Street, Bellville, to brighten up the area and foster a sense of community pride.
After the City granted the permit in May, the CID said it had to find an artist willing to take on the project without a budget.
“The search continued into June, and thanks to a sponsorship, the paint was ordered from Johannesburg and finally delivered in August.
“When the call went out, art teacher Ingrid Langenhoven immediately showed interest and had her initial design ready by late September,” the CID group told Northern News.
The mural, In His Light Take Flight, was then unveiled on Thursday November 7.
Davian ver Neel, the VRCID area manager for Bellville, took on the responsibility of acquiring the necessary permits, gaining approval from neighbouring businesses, and securing both the scaffolding and the artist’s services at no cost.
This mural reflected the VRCID’s efforts to look after the urban environment for all, the group said.
VRCID chief operations officer Derek Bock added: “Ingrid’s work has brought a new vibrancy to our community. We should replicate her work and feature more of her artwork within the VRCID.”
