A ward councillor’s call to use Scottsdene’s Summerville Park for housing is stuck with the City departments, four months later.
Sub-council 2 gave Ward 7 councillor Grant Twigg's motion the green light in November last year.
Mr Twigg proposed subdividing the park and selling it, along with an adjacent City-owned plot, by public auction for the sole purpose of building housing
Asked for an update on the proposal, City spokesman Luthando Tyhalibongo, said: “The City can confirm that the sub-council has been informed to approach the recreation and parks department about the request to dispose of the land that is zoned as a public open space.”
The recreation and parks department still needed to indicate whether it wished to hold onto the site or release it to the City’s property management department, he said.
However, mayoral committee member for community service and health Patricia van der Ross, said: “Discussions are under way to transfer the erf to property management in accordance with internal processes. Once transferred, property management will then be in a position to investigate the most appropriate use for the land, taking into account the motion submitted by sub-council.”
In the meantime, the recreation and parks department would continue maintaining the park, she said.
