Logistics for upgrades to the Jip de Jager Drive in Bellville are expected to begin on Monday January 9.
The City's urban mobility directorate will begin with the dualling of the route in Bellville later this month and it is expected to be completed by December 2024, according to the statement released by the City.
This project, planned to take place over 22 months at a cost of more than R70 million, is being undertaken to increase road capacity and alleviate traffic congestion on the primary arterial route connecting Durbanville, Welgemoed, and Bellville with the N1 freeway.
The project includes the dualling of Jip de Jager Drive from Kommissaris Street to Van Riebeeckshof Road; the construction of retaining walls for a section adjacent to Kommandeur Street; the upgrade of existing signalised intersections along this stretch of Jip de Jager Drive; and the construction of walking and cycling lanes and the extension of a pedestrian culvert at Welgemoed Golf Course.
Mayoral committee member for urban mobility, Rob Quintas appealed to motorists to be patient and added that there was a need for more lanes in the area and surroundings.
“The contractor will do all it can to limit the impact on road users, however, all road construction projects come with a level of inconvenience and the more important the route, the more severe the impact will be. Best is to avoid this road as far as possible, and to anticipate delays when travelling along this section. Also, residents may experience some dust and noise pollution in the vicinity of the roadworks,” he said.
