Volunteers have cleared more than 200kg of litter from the Bellville CBD and surrounds.

The 30 volunteers from the Save the Earth from A to Z (ASEZ) met near Middestad Mall for the clean-up last Sunday morning.

“We are responsible in creating litter, so if everyone is aware of the litter and makes effort to make their space clean, then everything will go well. Therefore, more education about the effects of litter, can be helpful,” said said ASEZ member Lutho Mayeko.

The Bellville taxi rank, the train station and parts of Durban Road were littering hot spots, she said.

Ward councillor Jacoline Visser, who joined the clean-up, thanked the volunteers for their efforts in keeping Bellville’s streets clean.

“It’s good to have a lot of people that are willing to use their spare time on Sunday to do a clean-up operation. I hope other church groups and youth groups do the same. At this stage, we really do have a litter problem, we experience a lot of waste lying around and a lot of illegal dumping,” Ms Visser said.
