Young and old are benefiting from the City of Cape Town’s swimming lessons at the Morningstar Swimming Pool in Durbanville.

The facility’s learn-to-swim and aqua aerobics programmes aim to reduce drowning risks while encouraging an active lifestyle, according to the City.

The lessons started on Monday February 10 and are running until Monday March 31.

‘‘Swimming is a life-saving skill and programmes like these ensure that more residents, especially children, have access to safe and structured lessons," said Francine Higham, mayoral committee member for community services and health.

“By investing in water safety education, we are not only reducing the risk of drowning, but also promoting an active and healthy lifestyle within our communities."

The programme was also extended to seniors with aqua aerobics sessions on offer.

The oldest aqua aerobics participant, Elaine Adams, 76, was overjoyed at her newfound activity.

‘‘I never thought I would be able to do this at my age, but this programme has given me confidence and it’s easier to move in the water. It’s also a wonderful way to stay active and meet new friends.’’

Participants enter at the appropriate level and progress through two structured phases.

The Aqua Aerobics for seniors (45 - 60+ years) take place on Wednesdays from 9am until noon on a first come, first serve basis.

Meanwhile, the learn-to-swim sessions for Grade Rs (6-year-olds) run on Mondays from 10.30am to 11.50am and Grade 1s (7-year-olds) have their sessions on Tuesdays from 10.30am to 11.50am. The pupils are recruited from certain schools.

For more information or to enroll in upcoming sessions, contact Senior Facility Officer, Lucia Mgwiji at Lucia.Mgwiji@capetown.gov.za or Facility Officer, Wesley Pretorius at Wesley.Pretorius@capetown.gov.za at Morningstar Swimming Pool.

The learn-to-swim sessions for Grade R run on Mondays from 10.30am to 11.50am and Grade 1s have their sessions on Tuesdays from 10.30am to 11.50pm at the Morningstar Swimming Pool.
