Fresh off winning Fish Hoek AthleticClub's Redhill Marathon for the fourth consecutive time, Sibusiso Madikizela, from Khayelitsha, is not resting on his laurels and already has his sights set on the upcoming major races.
It is fair to say he has made the Red Hill Marathon his personal playground after yet another successful defence of his title.
Next on his agenda are strong performances at the Two Oceans Ultra and the Cape Town Marathon.
Speaking about his recent Red Hill victory, where he clocked his fastest marathon time in ten years, 2hr:28min, Madikizela described the race as a perfect build-up to the Two Oceans Ultra.
“The hills and the weather here are usually similar to what you get on Two Oceans Marathon day,” he said.
“The route itself is not that different from Two Oceans, except that one race is longer than the other.”
“To prepare for Oceans, this is a race to run to test yourself,” he added.
“I would like to do well in Two Oceans Ultra and the Cape Town Marathon. Those are my next targets.”
Reflecting on his weekend win, Madikizela admitted he went in unsure of what to expect, despite having full confidence in his fitness.
“When I came here, I was a bit skeptical because of the last two races I did, so I wasn’t completely sure. But I knew I was in good shape,” he said.
One of the races he referenced is the Bay to Bay 30 km run, where he crossed the line in fifth place, originally targeting a podium finish.
That performance, he believes, provided a valuable benchmark for his current training and helped him approach Red Hill with focus and determination.
