The Cape Town Baseball Federation witnessed a seismic shift this season as Durbanville finally wrested the Major League title away from the long-dominant Bothasig and Bellville strongholds, signalling a changing of the guard in local baseball.
Yet for Grassy Park Crusaders, that narrative was paired with a tougher struggle on the field, one that saw them finish at the bottom of the log after Saturday's Round 21 clash at Chukker Road.

For Grassy Park, whose campaign yielded just two victories in the 21-game season, the result marked a disappointing end to a campaign that did not quite go to plan.
The bottom finish now means relegation to the Second League next season, a setback, but also an opportunity. While dropping down a division is never the ambition, it offers the Crusaders a crucial reset.

However, Crusaders’ season should not be viewed solely through the lens of their position on the standings.
Tough seasons often provide the clearest lessons and this year’s challenges, whether in close-run games or defensive lapses, have revealed areas ripe for improvement.
The spirit and determination the side showed in tight contests like Saturday’s will serve as a foundation for off-season work and structured rebuilding.
Finishing bottom might not be where the Crusaders envisioned themselves by the first pitch, but the positives remain.

With the renewed competitiveness sparked by Durbanville’s breakthrough and clubs like VOB rising through the ranks, Grassy Park now has clear benchmarks to chase, starting by working their way back to the league.
The road back to the Major League will demand patience and discipline, but the next chapter of the rebuild begins in the Second League, where the focus shifts from survival to restoration.
