Masiphumelele in search of first win
Masiphumelele will visit Primrose in a Super League C (SLC) encounter at the weekend looking to register their first win in seven outings.
The team from the far south have not had a great start to the season and at the weekend lost their sixth game in a row, 33-15 away to Rangers.
The SLC encounter between the two teams drew a significant number of spectators.
The loss for Masiphumelele leaves them with only two points on the board. Despite their ongoing challenges, the team showed moments of resilience, but it wasn't enough to overcome the well-coordinated attack and defence of hosts Rangers.
Yusuf George, Ndikho Makapela, Simamkele Kwesaba, and Yassen Orrie were the try scorers for Rangers. Joel Murphy was pivotal in securing the win, converting two of the tries and adding three penalties to the scoreboard.
For Masiphumelele, Joe Lyons and John Pierre Joseph scored the away side's tries with Giles Clark adding more points with a conversion and a penalty.
Their upcoming game against Primrose will be another test as Primrose showed in their last game when they narrowly lost to league leading Pniel Villagers 30-29.
This means Masiphumelele will have to be at their absolute best if their are to break their zero in the win column and work on getting to the safer side of the league standings.
On the other hand, Rangers have 15 points after four games, and have positioned themselves well to make a strong chase for the promotion spots in the league.
Rangers and the rest of the Super League C sides are all chasing the current pacesetters, Pniel Villagers, who have made a dominant start to the season by winning all six of their games.
With the win against Primrose they maintained their unbeaten streak and keep a safe distance from the chasing pack. They currently sit atop the log with 28 points, four points clear of Macassar.
Macassar, another formidable contender, also had an impressive weekend, easily defeating Scottsdene Central 62-7 by running in 10 tries. Macassar has won all five of their opening games, boasting the most points scored and the fewest conceded in the league. Their performance underscores their status as a leading team and a tough competitor for any side in the league.
In other Super League C matches over the weekend, Goodwood demonstrated their strength by running in nine tries to secure a 55-0 victory against Strand, marking their third win in four games. Gardens claimed their second win in five games with a commanding 33-17 triumph over Eesterivier.
Looking ahead in other matches taking place this coming weekend, Rangers will travel to Atlantis, aiming to build on their recent success and make it two wins in a row. Other fixtures for Saturday, June 1, include Macassar vs Busy Bees, Paarl vs Goodwood, Young Peoples vs Strand United, and Blue Jets vs Gardens.
