AS WE celebrate International Women's Day, we are reminded of the progress made towards achieving gender parity, but also of the significant challenges that still lie ahead.
This year's theme, "Accelerate Action," serves as a call to action for individuals, organisations, and governments to intensify efforts towards creating a more equitable world.
Despite the advancements made in South Africa and around the world, women continue to face numerous obstacles, including unequal pay, limited access to education and healthcare, and discriminatory laws and policies.
The World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report 2022 reveals that it will take about 132 years to achieve full parity at the current rate of progress. This is incomprehensible and brings into question the huge impact that women have on the economy and in their communities, which is still being marginalised.
However, I firmly believe that women hold the power to accelerate change. By investing in self-development, education, health, and wellness, women can empower themselves to break free from the constraints that have held us back for far too long.
As women, we juggle multiple roles in society, as caregivers, professionals, daughters, sisters, and mothers. We are expected to be nurturing, supportive, and selfless, often at the expense of our own well-being. But I ask you, how can we pour from an empty cup? How can we show up fully for others if we are not taking care of ourselves?
Mindfulness is essential in these present times. With the numerous responsibilities and roles that come with being a woman, it is easy to get caught up in the chaos and lose sight of what is truly important. But when we take the time to breathe, reflect, and recharge, we become more aware of our thoughts, emotions, and actions. We begin to see the world around us with fresh eyes, and we start to make conscious choices that align with our values and goals.
Self-care is not selfish. It is essential. By prioritising our mental, emotional, and physical well-being, we become more resilient, more confident, and more empowered to take on the challenges that lie ahead. We must acknowledge that our well-being is not a luxury, but a necessity.
So, what does it take to be mindful and empowered in these present times? It takes intention, commitment, and a willingness to take ownership of our lives. It takes recognising that we are not victims of circumstance, but rather creators of our own destiny.
When a woman changes the way she looks at her world, the world around her starts to change. She becomes a force to be reckoned with, a catalyst for positive change. She inspires others to do the same, creating a ripple effect of empowerment that can be felt far and wide.
So, let us celebrate International Women's Day on March 8 by acknowledging the progress made, but also by recognising the work that still needs to be done. Let us commit to accelerating action, to empowering ourselves and others to create a more just and equitable world. Women throughout history have risen through adversity and have a track record of turning adversity into advantage.
Let us remember that we are the change-makers, the trailblazers, and the leaders we have been waiting for. We are the ones we have been searching for.
My advice to women on this significant day: work on yourself, your mindset, your spirituality. Your internal power is your guide. You can’t be distracted if you want to grow, so stay focused on your goals. Live an iconic personal life and don’t get caught up with things or people who drain your energy. Focus on a few things that make you come alive. Things that bring excitement and joy back into your life.
Remember, that the one thing you are most afraid to do is the very thing that is most valuable to do. Walk towards the things that terrify you. Trust me you will find freedom when you overcome your fears. My life is a testament to this. Allow yourself to believe in the wanders, the mysteries and the magic of life. It will give you a sense of renewed energy and excitement.
Go to your limits and push further and be whatever and whoever you want to be. Be grateful and celebrate who you are every waking day that you get to spend on this big blue earth.
