This March, the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is offering an exciting opportunity to experience the country's natural beauty with free access to all national botanical and zoological gardens across the nation.
From Monday, 10 March to Sunday, 16 March 2025, visitors can explore these stunning spaces, all part of a nationwide celebration of biodiversity in honour of National Gardens Week.
For the first time, SANBI is hosting National Gardens Week, inviting everyone—from families to nature lovers and wellness seekers—to discover the richness of South Africa’s diverse plant and animal life.
The gardens, which play a critical role in preserving over 95,000 unique species, are the perfect backdrop for visitors to reconnect with nature and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities.
The theme for this year’s National Gardens Week, “Grow Your Joy,” encourages people to embrace the uplifting power of nature. In a time when work, stress, and the challenges of daily life can take a toll on well-being, nature offers a serene and healing escape.
With free access to all national gardens and zoological spaces, this is the perfect opportunity to spend time outdoors and rejuvenate, whether through peaceful walks, engaging educational programs, or participating in fun activities for all ages.

"The gardens are a sanctuary for both people and wildlife," says Shonisani Munzhedzi, Chief Executive Officer of SANBI.
"We are thrilled to offer free access, allowing more people to enjoy the beauty of our gardens and learn about the incredible conservation work taking place. From rare plants to endangered species, the gardens play a pivotal role in safeguarding our natural heritage."
This year, visitors can look forward to a range of activities, including guided tours, plant sales at nurseries, park runs, yoga sessions, gardening demonstrations, and more.
Whether you are keen to learn about indigenous plants, capture stunning photos of wildlife, or simply relax and enjoy the peaceful environment, National Gardens Week offers something for everyone.
The free access spans across all nine provinces, from the renowned Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town to the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in Johannesburg, with each location offering its own unique experience.
The National Zoological Garden in Pretoria and the Mokopane Biodiversity Centre in Limpopo will also be open, allowing visitors to get closer to South Africa’s remarkable animal species, many of which are classified as threatened due to habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict.
